Sarah's Page

Hello, My name is Sarah LeCara and I'm 4 years old.
I was born and live in Houston, Texas with my parents.
I do not have any brother or sisters, but I do have a very large and caring family.
I enjoy riding my bike and going to the beach!
We really enjoyed meeting everyone at the
Myrtle Beach gathering in 2001!

IT MATTERS TO THIS ONE

As I walked along the seashore
This young boy greeted me.
He was tossing a stranded starfish
Back into the deep blue sea.
I said, Tell me why you bother.
Why you waste your time this way?
There's a million stranded starfish.
Does it matter anyway?

And he said, "It matters to this one.
It deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll return it to the sea.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."

As I walked into the classroom
The teacher greeted me.
She was helping Johnny study.
He was struggling - I could see.
I said, "Tell me why you bother.
Why you waste your time this way?
Johnny's only one of millions.
Does it matter anyway?"

And she said, "It matters to this one.
He deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all, I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll help him be what he can be.
It matters to this one,
And it matters a lot to me."

August 1998

Sarah's first cranial surgery was in August 1998. She had a total cranial vault with the mid-face distraction devices.
These pins (or devices) were turned a half of a centimeter twice day for three months.
The mid-face was done in order to try to alleviate her need for the trach, which did not happen.

July 1999

Here is Sarah almost a year later playing with her blocks.
She has had all of her hand surgeries completed and planning for her next cranial surgery in April 2000

May 2000

Sarah had her second mid face surgery in April, 2000. This surgery was the toughest by far. Sarah developed a bacterial infection within her head, and spent one month in the hospital controlling this infection through IV therapy. The Doctors wanted to keep a close eye on her until they knew everything was under control. Sarah lost a lot of hair during this time due to the stress her body went through. Needless to say Sarah was a trooper; She is the one that got us through this tough time!

January 2001
Here is our little Sarah again, minutes before another cranial surgery.
Sarah is ready to have the Ridged External Device, (The R.E.D System).
We are hoping that this device will allow Sarah enough air space to alleviate the trach.

We are home and Sarah has adjusted very well to the (R.E.D System). We are just amazed how well Sarah does with all these different devices that she has had. We think because Sarah has had a device placed about ever 8 months, she feels it's a normal thing and does well with them.

June 2001

Sarah had a wonderful birthday party. She was four years old April 4th. The June picture was taken for the ID badge that was worn on the Myrtle Beach Vacation trip! Sarah had the R.E.D removed earlier than expected due to a fall she had at the end of February. The R.E.D System really pulled her mid face out, but because of the premature removal, we felt she did not get the full benefit of this procedure. The nose stints were placed in her nose for a period of 3 months.

Labor Day Weekend!!!
Sarah has started pre-school and has absolutely no plans for any craniofacial surgery for the next year!
It is about time that this little girl takes a break from all hospitals and procedures!
We are so proud of her!!!!!!

Earlier photos of Sarah

Hello - just a few lines to say that Sarah is doing ok now.  She has been in the hospital 4 times.  The staff are getting to know her very well.  Sarah has had a tracheotomy and that is keeping her O2 stats in order.  She has had her cat scan and is getting ready to get her first hand surgery on 4/20/98 to release her pinky and index fingers.  They are talking about head surgery real soon.  I'm sending a few more pics if you please post them.  We are very proud of the things Sarah has overcome so far. It has been very helpful to us being member's and friends of all of you at Teeters Page and I thank you for this. All our Love Tamara, Sarah and Charles
